Frau Holle - Contemporary Painting by Barbara Schauß

Barbara Schauß

Mother Holle has shaken out her beds. The landscape is blanketed in a light layer of the season's first snow. Is this a glimpse of an enchanting landscape, or a frozen river already bearing the marks of ice skating? Patches of earth still show through the pristine snow cover. Perhaps the snow will stay? Created using mixed media and built up in many layers, the work possesses a tactile quality. Various pastel tones shimmer beneath the surface. Depending on the lighting, the image takes on the appearance of a glacier—at times icy blue, at others tinged with a subtle turquoise hue. For the finish, a texture of tiny glass beads was applied in numerous areas, creating a delicate sparkle that shifts with the light.

"My artistic roots lie in Impressionism. I have been particularly influenced by the French Impressionists. Nature is my greatest source of inspiration. Today, my work can be viewed as a journey "from Impressionism to Abstraction." Representational and abstract painting now play an equally important role in my artistic practice.

I work primarily with oil, acrylic, and mixed media in a variety of formats. My creative process is characterized by both spontaneous painting and elaborate, multi-layered compositions that evolve through numerous layers.

I began exhibiting my work 20 years ago. Today, my paintings can be found in collections around the world."
