Vanitas Painting: Skull on Book with Candle - by Gyunay Aliev

Aliev, Gyunay

This vanitas painting, Skull on Book with Candle, by Gyunay Aliev is a finely executed oil work on wood panel, measuring 40 × 30 cm (image size 38 × 29 cm), and sold unframed. Rendered in a realistic style, the composition of a skull resting on aged books beside a softly burning candle evokes themes of transience, knowledge, and the passage of time.

The subdued lighting and muted tones create a dark, eerie yet unexpectedly tender atmosphere, inviting quiet reflection and lending the work a deeply mysterious presence.
