Christmas Group (Large) - Ceramic Nativity Scene

The Christmas Group (Large) is a handmade ceramic nativity scene by Dutch artist and designer Nicolaas Maathuis. The set consists of 16 individually hand-formed ceramic figures presented in a wooden stable.

The group includes Mary, Joseph and the child, the Three Kings, two shepherds, an angel, three sheep, an ox, a donkey, a dog and a camel, accompanied by three palm trees and two candle holders. The figures are formed from solid ceramic and range from approximately 10 to 15 cm in height. Small variations in shape and surface remain visible as part of the handmade process.

The figures are presented in a wooden stable measuring approximately 35 × 17 × 21 cm. The stable features three windows, side panels and a star, with a ceramic base for the angel. The complete set is signed and numbered as a limited edition of 230 pieces.

Nicolaas Maathuis is a Dutch visual artist and designer. Born on June 23 in Deventer, the Netherlands, he followed a diverse educational and professional path, studying at the conservatory (ArtEZ), the Rietveld Academy, and the University of Amsterdam. His interests have ranged from music and pedagogy to visual art and law before he established himself as a visual artist and designer.

Maathuis works across painting, drawing, ceramics, furniture and applied art, often combining artistic ideas with functional objects. His work is characterised by simplified forms, a strong use of colour, and hand-drawn and handmade elements, with an interest in bringing art into everyday surroundings.
