Ralf Schmidt: "One of the ideas behind the creation of this image was corrupt arms deals around the world: The background scene is inspired by the situation in Syria at the time (and currently), with two business partners in the foreground smiling contentedly as they conclude their deal. I had seen some images from there and was horrified by the situation. Worldwide, approximately $9.5 billion is generated through arms exports. At an exhibition, a visitor saw the image as two actors who, recognizing the senselessness of mutual destruction, are deciding on a new beginning together. Like most of my images, this one has a symbolic character; it can be applied to processes in the business world."

In his work, Ralf Schmidt combines elements of illustration, graphic design, and painting to create a distinctive, stylized realism with Pop Art influences. Clear contours, striking colors, and isolated figures or objects characterize his style. Humorous, everyday scenes take on a deeper, often socially commentary meaning through composition and context.
Since the 1990s, Schmidt has been developing his series "Freie Malereien" (Free Paintings) and "Freie Malereien II" (Free Paintings II), in which he depicts human emotions and behavior in a deliberately reduced yet ambiguous style.
